Hope Amico founded gutwrench press in 2008.  She has a BFA from Louisiana State University, focusing on printmaking and book arts. She has worked with letterpress printers in Louisiana and the Bay Area, and in 2106 she returned to New Orleans where she now resides.  In 2017, gutwrench press moved their first press, a heidelberg Windmill named Tiny into the building now known as Paper Machine , a home for printing and book arts in New Orleans.
